I really wanted to use the opening scene as the screenshot, but thought that would be too spoilery even though it happens within five minutes. But it was my favorite scene of the ep for sure!

Some translation notes- I don’t love the sound of “Go Club”, because without context “go” can mean things other than the game. But if I used the Chinese name for it, Weiqi, would people recognize it?

I have no idea WTF Kaiyang was going on about with the demon king and dragon scales. I guess it’s related to the Jade-Faced Dragon story? I translated it as best I could despite being very confused.

Princess Taiping was a princess during the Zhou and Tang dynasty who was one of those “shadowy manipulate everyone behind the scenes” types. She was a major player in ending the Zhou dynasty, but eventually her obsession with power was her undoing. She was also fabled for her beauty, but I doubt that was the intended implication of the nickname… at least on the surface.

I decided at the last second to replace “OCD” with “germophobia”, even though that meant re-hardsubbing and uploading everything. I meant it in the conversational, non-literal way, but Lao Zhang doesn’t directly say that and some people with diagnosed OCD don’t approve of it being used casually.

Episode 2 is done! I found the scene from the above screenshot very moving. Maybe I get more invested watching it in the original language and paying close attention to every scene for translation?

I’m not sure how much detail to provide for the trigger warning, since I don’t want to spoil the plot. It should be okay to say that there is no on-screen committing or attempting suicide. If you want to know more, ask in the comments.

Whew, my first fansub is completed! I probably did a lot of wonky things, but I did my best and hopefully it’s at least functional and watchable. If anyone has better (free) file hosting options, I’ll definitely look into it. Zippyshare has a 500MB upload limit, so the 1080 episodes must be split into multiple parts.

Quick translation note- Zheng Wei calls Lin Jing’s parents “Uncle Lin” and “Auntie Sun”. They aren’t actually related, (that would be a very different kind of drama…) but it’s meant to show that Zheng Wei is so close to them that she’s considered part of the family. I’m not sure if Lin Jing does the same with her parents. I’m translating as I watch, so maybe it’ll come up in episode 2!

I’d also appreciate input on translating titles and nicknames. I decided on only leaving the Chinese when there isn’t an easy English equivalent because I assume that people are less familiar with “shixiong” than senpai/sunbae. But do you find nicknames like “Lao Zhang” confusing? Is “Junior Ruan” clunky?

If you ever wish these subtitles could be finished faster, well, what better way than to help out yourself? This little team of one would be honored to take on any volunteers to fill these positions:

  • Timer- This is perfect for someone who wants to help, but doesn’t know Chinese! No prior experience needed either! I waste a lot of time syncing lines that could be spent translating. All you need is a computer and a free application (Subtitle Workshop), and I can teach you the rest.
  • Translator- Self-explanatory.
  • Chinese Transcriber- This is for someone who can read Chinese but doesn’t want to go to the hassle of translating. Basically, you type out the Chinese captions line-by-line in a doc. It’s not required to create subs, but it would make cross-checking translations quicker and easier.
  • Editor- Must be Chinese-English fluent. There a few lines that make me scratch my head even after cracking open the dictionary, so someone to check for translation accuracy would be very helpful.

Request a Drama Guidelines

Do you have a Chinese drama that you wish you could watch with subtitles? I’m always open to taking translation suggestions! But first, please take a moment to make sure it adheres to these guidelines:

  1. Dramas with spoken Mandarin and simplified character (简化字) captions. Ask if you’re not sure!
  2. Not already subtitled. This includes in-progress and in-hiatus translations, unless the show has been formally dropped by its subber(s).
  3. The shorter the better. 50 episodes is the hard max, but less than 30 episodes preferred.
  4. No wuxia, historical, medical, or crime dramas. Basically, I’m looking for shows with simple vocabulary while I gain subbing experience.
  5. A heavy focus on romance is a big plus just due to personal preference.
